From 26th until 29th of July 2018 Sarajevo hosted international conference “Building Bridges for the Future” organized by Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church (CTEWC). This conference gathered around 500 theological ethicists from 80 countries. The C.T.E.W.C. network was born of a 2003 planning meeting arranged by James Keenan, S.J., and a group of international ethics scholars.
In his introductory speech Father Keenan said the site was chosen because Sarajevo “is neither the industrialized world nor the Global South—instead, we can bridge both.” He also noted, Sarajevo offered three important contexts for reflection: “peace building in the aftermath of ethnic conflict; interreligious and cross-cultural dialogue in a predominantly Muslim city (85 percent); and economic struggle (40 percent unemployment).”
Because of the context that Keenan mentions and because of the very topic of the conference, which is building bridges, Youth for Peace had the honor to present its work and its activities in the field of peace building and interreligious dialogue. Youth for Peace members Dajana Dejanović, Emina Frljak, Elma Bešlić and Samira Fatma Baručija took part in the conference. Elma Bešlić was honored to speak in the conference opening, side by side with Cardinal Vinko Puljić, apostolic nuncio for Bosnia and Herzegovina Luigi Pezzuto and James Keenan.
During the session, in front of 500 hundred participants our members talked about context of Bosnia and Herzegovina, their motivation for peace building, as well as why they have chosen Youth for Peace as a ground for their work and efforts.
