Training for youth workers "BEYOND cultural identity: Who we actually are?" took place in Sarajevo in the period 14-20/03/2022. Young people from Hungary, Serbia, Kosovo, Italy, and Bosnia and Herzegovina gathered in Sarajevo to learn about identity-related topics, with an emphasis on cultural identity. In addition to learning, young people were encouraged through introspective workshops to explore their personal identities and to place them in the context of the society in which they live.
Youth for Peace trainers worked with young people for seven days challenging, discussing, and questioning the role and importance of certain identities in the time and scope they live, but also the challenges that belonging to or not belonging to one group can bring. The inevitable topic of this training was the issue of people on the move, the role of their identities, and their influence in creating prejudices against them.
Finally, young people had the opportunity to get to know the culture of the city of Sarajevo, the religious and historical diversity of the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, exploring it through organized group visits to sites of great importance for the cultural identity of the city and its inhabitants. After the group visits, the young people explored Sarajevo in small groups, following the tasks designed specifically for them. In the final part of the training, participants reviewed the learning outcomes and developed a plan for using skills, knowledge, and attitudes in their future work as youth workers.
The BEYOND project continues its activities, as well as to challenge and learn about identities, interculturality, and xenophobia, as early as May 2022, when youth exchange is planned in Italy. The project is funded by the European Union through the Erasmus + program, implemented by the organizations Youth for Peace, THY, Balkans, let's get up!, Joint, and Hang-Kép Egyesület.
