A seminar "The Role of the Media in peacebuilding" was held in Sarajevo on 21 to 23 June. The seminar was held in cooperation with Youth for Peace with the Konrad Adenauer Sarajevo Foundation. The seminar brought together 20 young people from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina who are active in civil society and are engaged in various media activities.
Some of the key topics of this three-day seminar were on the media and their role in society, freedom of speech in the media and hate speech, on politics, the promotion of stereotypes and prejudices, and the importance of media literacy, and finally on media and peace building. studied by young people with professors, experts and coaches involved in working with the media.
A professor at the University of East Sarajevo, Vuk Vučetić talked with young people about very interesting and topical topics such as media literacy and media and the promotion of stereotypes and prejudices.
What are the media, their role, how they influence the creation of a society, but also how the media function from within are just some of the topics on which the participants had the opportunity to talk and learn with the trainer Elma Bešlić from the American Councils for International Education, which is also a member of Yout for Peace.
Also, this is a great opportunity for new experiences of students who participated in the seminar. One of the participants, Nikola Kandic stated the following:
"How to participate in education of this type is not something new for me, it's hard to impress me, so my expectations are always high. What distinguished this seminar from the majority is the attitude of the trainer's presentation and the opportunity for attendees to actively participate in the work. Namely, the presentations were just an accompanying tool, while most of the time devoted to experiential learning, exchanged ideas, opinions, asking questions. This was an exceptional opportunity for vertical knowledge exchange, from trainers to participants, and horizontal among the participants. A stereotypical view of the seminar, on which you only sit and memorize, has been demolished already during the first day, and I'm going home with new knowledge, tools, approaches, and a network of new contacts. "
"Although the workshop only encouraged further learning and research, the acquired and renewed knowledge will certainly be useful to the participants in order to build peace in their local communities." Said trainer Elma Bešlić.
Participant Azra Berbić also shared her experience: "The seminar fulfilled my expectations with its content. I am pleased because an excellent balance of lectures of trainers and dynamics in discussions, exercises and joint work is made. We always have the most useful exercises and work in groups, because then we can immediately apply what we previously learned by listening to trainers, so I'm really happy. If we had more time, we could certainly get even deeper and more serious about the issue of the role of the media in peacebuilding, which I think is extremely important and still very relevant to our post-conflict society, but this three-day seminar was very good foundation and a great starting point on the basis of which we can all continue to act within our activities in a positive direction. "- concluded Azra.
